Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Gossage to Be on Hand
In only its second year, the Taste of Trinidad is quickly growing to be a “can’t miss” Southern Colorado outdoor event.
The highlight of this year’s festival is the celebrity guest appearance of Richard “Goose” Gossage, the nine-time Major League Baseball All-Star and recent Hall of Fame inductee. The Goose will be at the Taste of Trinidad to receive a key to the City of Trinidad from the city’s mayor, the Honorable Joe Reorda. Gossage will also be receiving an honorary lifetime golf membership from the event host, Cougar Canyon. The key ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m., and afterwards, Gossage will be available to meet festival-goers.
The Hall of Famer’s visit is one of the many happenings throughout the day. The Taste kicks-off with free hot air balloon rides beginning at 7:30 a.m. followed by the Taste of Trinidad 5K Run and Fun Walk on the streets of Cougar Canyon at 9:00 a.m. Beginning in the morning and continuing until 4:00 p.m., folks can enjoy the Taste of Trinidad itself, a food fair of more than a dozen of Trinidad’s favorite restaurants. Better Business Bureau Alert - "Best of" Awards

Recent emails notifying businesses that they have won prestigious awards from a national association appear to be part of a widespread scheme designed to get companies to pay for “vanity” awards and plaques.
The group behind the “awards” program is the U. S. Commerce Association of Washington, D. C. The association has been sending out news releases in recent months to businesses nationwide, telling them they have been selected as “outstanding local businesses” and offering them an opportunity to buy one or more awards to mark the honor.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) urges that area businesses exercise caution when dealing with this group or a related organization called the U. S. Local Business Association.
On its Web site, the U. S. Commerce Association says the award program was “created to honor and generate public recognition of the achievements and positive contributions of businesses and organizations in and around (targeted area named here).”
Other than the material on its Web site, there seems to be little publicly available about the U. S. Commerce Association. The site says its offices are in Washington, D. C., and a representative of the BBB that covers the area said that office has begun receiving inquiries about the association in the past several days. A recently updated BBB report says that the association’s Web site is a match to the Web site of an association with a similar name – U. S. Local Business Association. Both groups identify Ashley Carter as chair of the associations’ selection committees. And both groups report virtually identical award programs, the BBB says. The Washington, D. C. – area BBB office gives U. S. Local Business Association an “F” grade and warns that persons contacted about awards must be sure the recognition is not, “in fact, an attempt to obtain access to a company’s information or to elicit funds by an entity that may not be what it represents itself as being.”
An internet search of corporate records uncovered little additional information on the association. An email to the office (there is no phone number listed on its Web site) went unanswered.
In a link provided in its email to Joshu, the U. S. Commerce Association provides a list of several hundred award winners from 2008. Among the winners were a discount driving school in Maryland, a tattoo removal clinic in California, a bagpipe player in Arizona and a “laser tag family fun center” in Louisiana. Other award winners were in categories such as “astrologers,” “disc jockeys,” “tanning salons,” and “artificial waterfalls.”
The BBB offers several tips to avoid losing money in a “vanity award” program:
· Learn everything you can about who is giving the award. If it is coming from a mystery company, chances are it simply wants your money.
· If you didn’t apply for an award or the group cannot tell you how you were nominated, chances are the award is not legitimate.
· Most legitimate awards do not come with costs for the recipient. If there is a cost, scrutinize it even more closely.
· Ask specific questions about how your company or organization was chosen for an award and find out how many similar awards are given each year.

Magnum completes Hudson, CO Tire Landfill Purchase
Magnum Completes Acquisition of Hudson, Colorado Facility, One of the World's Largest Tire Landfills, and Perhaps Currently the Largest in the USA

The closing took place on August 25, 2009 at which time Magnum took ownership of all Assets associated with the facility. The facility is one of the largest tire landfills in the world and is situated close to major infrastructure and rail. Its central location is extremely well situated to accept and supply all of Magnum's current and future facility operations.
The Company has acquired all the following listed assets free and clear of all liens, liabilities, claims and interest other than certain permitted liens and assumed liabilities:
(a) all inventory, supplies, and raw materials;
(b) all equipment, machinery, vehicles, trailers, furniture, fixtures, computer equipment, spare parts, and tools;
(c) its land;
(d) all goodwill and other intangible assets associated with the business;
(e) all of the rights, titles and interest under the leases
(f) all of the rights, title and interest under the contracts
(g) to the extent assignable, all permits (including all approvals, authorizations, licenses, orders, registrations, certificates, variances, exemptions and other similar permits or rights), obtained from any governmental body, all pending applications therefore, and all reclamation bonds or financial assurances posted on account thereof;

(g) to the extent assignable, all permits (including all approvals, authorizations, licenses, orders, registrations, certificates, variances, exemptions and other similar permits or rights), obtained from any governmental body, all pending applications therefore, and all reclamation bonds or financial assurances posted on account thereof;
(h) any rights under or pursuant to all warranties, representations and guarantees including those made by suppliers, manufacturers and contractors to the extent relating to products sold, or services provided, to the extent affecting any acquired assets, other than any warranties, representations and guarantees to the extent pertaining to any excluded assets;
(i) all rights or causes of action arising out of occurrence that take place after the Closing, and related to the acquired assets, and all rights to insurance and condemnation proceeds relating to the damage, destruction, taking or other impairment of the acquired assets which damage, destruction, taking or other impairment occurs after the date of the Agreement and on or prior to the closing; provided, however, all avoidance actions shall constitute excluded assets; and
(j) all books, records, ledgers, files, documents (including originally executed copies of written contracts), customer and supplier lists, correspondence, memoranda, forms, lists, documents relating to the intellectual property, advertising and promotional materials, studies, reports, sales and purchase correspondence, photographs, quality control records and procedures, equipment maintenance records, manuals and warranty information, research and development files, in each case, whether in hard copy or magnetic format and in each instance.

The Seventh Annual NatureSweet Best Homegrown Tomato Challenge is coming back to Colorado this year to find out! The event will be held at the King Soopers® store at 15200 W. 64th Avenue in Arvada on Saturday, August 22. Gardeners are invited to bring in their best tomatoes in both the small and large tomato categories for a chance to be one of two $2500 winners! Two runners-up in each category will each receive King Soopers gift cards valued at $250.

There are no restrictions on the variety or method of growing tomatoes, except that all entries must be homegrown by the entrant (contest is not open to commercial growers). On August 22, contestants must bring three large OR 10 small tomatoes of the same variety to the King Soopers store at 15200 W. 64th Avenue between 9 and 11 a.m. for judging. ONE ENTRY PER HOUSEHOLD.
HOW TO WIN:
Tomatoes will be judged in two separate categories: small tomato variety and large tomato variety. There will be one $2500 winner for each category. The large or small classification of the tomato will be based on variety and/or weight. Tomatoes in both categories will be judged based on Brix/Sweetness and Taste. A Brix test determines sweetness -- the higher the Brix number, the better the flavor. The finalists will then be taste-tested by a panel of local celebrity judges and two Grand Prize Winners and four runners-up will be announced at noon. The two $2500 first prize and four $250 gift cards for runners up will then be awarded.
